Golf Equipment

Each player MUST have their own set of golf clubs including a putter.
Our Proshop has clubs, trundlers and carts for hire if required.

 Speed of Play

General rule is:
  • Please keep up with the group ahead of you.
  • Walk quickly between shots, and be ready to play your shot when it is your turn.

Give Way to Course Staff

The Course Staff have right of way at all times.

Please DO NOT PLAY when a member of staff is within range. The quicker they can complete their work, the better the course will be and the more enjoyable your game.

Care of the Course
  • Please repair all pitch marks on the greens and take a bucket of sand to repair your divot marks on the tees and fairways.
  • Sand and buckets are available on the 1st and 10th tees.
  • Before leaving a bunker, a player should carefully rake and smooth the surface, and re-fill any depressions or holes made by footprints or the playing of a shot before exiting the bunker.  The rake should be left in the bunker.

Safety

Ensure no one is standing close by or in a position to be hit by your club, ball or any stones, pebbles, twigs etc when making a stroke or practice swing.

Do not play until all players in front of you are out of range.

If you hit a ball in a direction where it could hit someone, immediately shout the warning "fore"

When playing the 6th hole across the road always make sure that there are no vehicles or pedestrians within a wide area so that your ball will have no chance of coming close to either.  It is the golfers responsibility to wait until vehicles and pedestrians are well away before taking their shot.

Practice Fairway Guidelines
The Practice Area is restricted to MEMBERS USE ONLY
  • The practice area is located at the bottom of the driveway at the main gate
  • Practice only between the unmown hillside on the left and the formed garden on the sloped area on the right
  • The 10th fairway is NOT TO BE USED as a landing area.
  • Practice area users must give way to players on the 10th fairway.  Do not hit balls whilst 10th hole is in use.  Wait until the last player in the group is at least half way up the hill to the green before re-commencing practice

Course Etiquette more fully explained
Howick Golf Club has a reputation for being a social, friendly club.  All members are expected to act in such a way as to uphold this reputation and enhance their fellow golfers' enjoyment of the game by understanding and adhering to the accepted course etiquette and by-laws of the Club (available from the main office).

These are further elaborated below:
  • Give way to Green Staff at all times.    Players must refrain from hitting their ball towards areas where the greens staff are working.  When the flag has been removed from the hole DO NOT PLAY a stroke towards the green.
  • Players should play at all times without delay
  • Walk quickly between shots and always be ready to play your shot when it is your turn
  • It is the duty of every group to keep up with the group in front.  If a group is consistently holding up players behind them, and is more than one complete hole behind the players in front, they have lost their place in the field.  It is their responsibility to call the players following them "through", as well as increasing their own speed of play.   (Speed of Play is explained further below)
  • No one should move, talk or stand close to or directly behind the ball or hole when a player is addressing the ball or making a stroke.
  • Players should ensure that when dropping bags or the flagstick, no damage is done to the putting green and that neither they nor their caddies damage the hole by standing close to the hole or in handling the flag stick.  The flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole before the players leave the putting green
  • Do not practice putting after completing a hole when other groups are following
  • To ensure that large fields on competition days move at a reasonable pace it is recommended that the owner of a ball which is likely to be lost (I) plays a provisional ball (II)  searches for the ball alone whilst the group play their shots.  If there is a significant delay the group should allow the group behind (if waiting) to pass them; and should not continue their play until those players have passed and are out of range.
